Ghost Hunter Purchases Kevorkian ‘Death Van’

The infamous “death van” once owned by Dr. Jack Kevorkian has been purchased by well-known ghost hunter Zak Bagans. The star of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures paid $32,500 for the poorly conditioned 1968 Volkswagon used to carry out some of the estimated 130 doctor-assisted suicides performed by the controversial Kevorkian, who died in 2011. Prior to the purchase, the dilapidated van was parked alongside classic cars and lawnmowers in the warehouse of a pawn shop on 8 Mile in Detroit. Kevorkian lived out of the van during portions of his life and his first publicly acknowledged assisted suicide patient, 54-year-old Janet Adkins, died in the van in June of 1990 in rural California. Records indicate that Kevorkian parted with the van in 1997 when he sold it to a Volkswagen parts yard for $150 in 1997.

“It’s been sitting in our warehouse for two years, so I think we did all right with the deal,” said Seth Gold, owner of American Jewelry and Loan. His initial purchase of the van was featured on an episode of truTV’s Hardcore Pawn in 2013.

Labeled as “Dr. Death” by the media-at-large, Dr. Kevorkian was reviled by those questioning the ethics of medical professionals administering euthanasia and championed by proponents of “death with dignity.” Kevorkian defiantly performed his assisted suicides in the face of state prosecution, going as far as daring authorities to arrest him during a suicide procedure documented on 60 Minutes. Kevorkian was acquitted of murder charges three times before finally being found guilty of 2nd degree in 1999 and serving an eight year prison sentence before dying of Hepatitis C, which he contracted while performing research on blood transfusions. Kevorkian was also an oil painter, and his often macabre art may have offered a glimpse into the personality of the doctor. Kevorkian sometimes painted with his own blood, and one of his grotesque pieces was described as “of a child eating the flesh off a decomposing corpse.”

A Ghost Hunting Gold Mine

As the exorbitant purchase price reflects, Kevorkian’s morbid van is obviously seen as prime property among the ghost hunting crowd, and the pawn shop entertained many offers before it was bought by Bagans. Zak told TMZ that he is planning to use the van as part of a future “paranormal project.” The pawn shop owner alleged that the only possible paranormal activity which occurred while the van was in his possession was when Theresa Caputo, the famous Long-Island Medium and reality TV personality, paid a visit to the facility.

“I was giving her a tour of the warehouse and she said, ‘I feel something back here’,” Gold told USA Today
