“Catastrophic Failure” Of Engine on Plane During Takeoff

(Las Vegas, NV)

4:13 PM (Local Time)

A Boeing 777 has caught fire this evening at McCarran International Airport. The British Airways flight BA2276 plane was about to take off for London Gatwick when the left engine suffered ‘catastrophic failure’ and burst into flames. All 159 Passengers and 13 crew on board were safely evacuated via inflatable slides, though seven people were treated for minor injuries such as cuts and bruises from evacuation as a result of the fire. 50 emergency crew are said to have arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames. The Federal Aviation Administration current status lists arrivals at 15 minutes behind schedule, and departure delays of 30-44 minute delays due to emergency services vehicles still on the runway, even four hours after the fire broke out.

A reporter from The Guardian was on the plane at the time of the blaze:

“I heard we’d been taxiing for quite a while. I wasn’t very conscious of the plane taking off – and then very quickly it shuddered to a halt.

“It was going fast, it wasn’t meandering, it was about to take off, so it was going quickly.

“A few people started running down the plane from the back, a few people stood up, and the staff were all saying, ‘Keep seated,’ reassuring people. But I don’t think they’d realised what was happening.”

Traumatized passengers were taken to the Orleans Hotel. There is no word yet on the exact cause of the engine failure, as it is pending investigation by Federal Authorities and airport officials.
