Religious Experience Caught On EEG

Doctors in Israel have recorded the results of a man having a religious experience on an EEG, and what they saw was remarkable.

The patient was in the hospital for tests for epilepsy, which he’s suffered from for 40 years.  He was advised by doctor to stop taking his medication before the appointment.  He was attached to an EEG machine at the time when he abruptly “froze” and stared at the ceiling for  several minutes, stating later that he felt that God was approaching him.

The readings showed increased activity in the left prefrontal cortex right before the event, which was quickly diagnosed as a “grandiose religious delusion of revelation and missionary zeal in the context of postictal psychosis”, a form of psychosis that can occur after epileptic seizures, as written the journal Epilepsy and Behaviour.

The Epilepsy Foundation confirms that patents with TLE seizures occasionally report hallucinations giving them warnings, which coincides with reports hearing voices, music, people or even experience false smells or tastes which can last for a few seconds to a couple of minutes.
